Shahid Kapoor, who has recently tasted massive success with his debut OTT series Farzi, has been in the movies for two decades and has seen some big highs and lows. Amongst some of his best works are his collaborations with director Vishal Bhardwaj and in a recent interview, Shahid revealed that he did not take any money when he worked in the director’s 2014 film Haider.

Shahid shared with Film Companion that he did not take a penny for Haider and added that he was the only one who did it for free. “I’m the only one who did it for free,” he said. The film also starred Tabu, Kay Kay Menon, Irrfan Khan and Shraddha Kapoor. Shahid said that his remuneration was beyond the budget of the movie and the makers made it clear that if they paid him, the film wouldn’t get made.

“They couldn’t afford me. They said if they had to pay me, then the budget of the film wouldn’t get sanctioned because it was a very experimental subject. They really didn’t know if it would land at all but it was a very compelling kind of product to make and so I said, ‘Yeah, I will do it for free,'” he shared.

When asked if he has done other films for free as well, Shahid Kapoor said that Haider was an exception and this was the only time that he let go of his fee. “It was only time I did it. It just happened at that time. I said, ‘Yeah let’s do it, it’s okay,'” he shared. The actor then laughed and said that it was “wonderful” and can only work if it is an exception and not a habit. “Ghar bhi chalana hai (I have to take care of my household as well),” he said with a laugh.

Haider was an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet and is considered to be one of the best works of Shahid Kapoor.
