Actor Ranbir Kapoor has opened up about the last days with his father Rishi Kapoor and how the two bonded after years of a “distant” relationship. Ranbir recalled that when he was told that Rishi could pass away anytime soon, he had a panic attack in the hospital. Rishi Kapoor breathed his last in May 2020 after his battle with cancer. In an interview with Nikhil Kamath, Ranbir spoke about his childhood and said he “loved” his father, but his relationship with him was “distant and no so great.”

“I stopped crying very early on. I didn’t even cry when my father passed away. When I was spending the night at the hospital, the doctor told me, ‘This is his last night, he is going to go anytime soon,’ I remember going up to the room and had a panic attack. I didn’t know how to express myself, there was too much happening that was to take. But I don’t think I have grieved, understood the loss.”

Ranbir, who has often spoken about the fractured relationship between the two, said he feels guilt that he couldn’t “let go” of the distance between them. “The one year we spent together in New York while his treatment was on, he often spoke about that. I was there for 45 days and one day he came and started crying. He has never shown that kind of weakness to me. It was so awkward for me because I didn’t know if I should hold him or hug him; I really realised the distance. I feel guilty that I didn’t have the grace to let go off the distance between us and go and hug him, give him some love.

“You are also brought up a certain way where you’re told, ‘Now you are responsible’ and then certain things play on your mind, I have my mother, sister, wife, a child and my father passes away… Can I show my weakness? I don’t know what it is, but I just didn’t show it,” he added.

Recently in an interview, Ranbir’s sister Riddhima also spoke about how the Kapoor family dealt with the deaths of Rishi Kapoor and Rajiv Kapoor within a year of each other and said the family has gotten “closer” since then and looks out for each other a “little bit more.”

“Many family members have passed on in the family. I am not talking about my immediate family, I am talking about even the extended family. All of us have become closer and more united. We call each other up every other day, we are on FaceTime, we don’t have to meet every other day, or every single day, but at least we know what is happening with each other, so definitely it has brought us very close,” she added.
