Veteran actor Kanwaljit Singh, currently earning praise for his role in Sanya Malhotra’s Mrs, recalled his experience working on the 1985 TV show Chhapte Chhapte, where he was initially set to star opposite Sarika. The two had even begun shooting for the pilot, but Sarika left the show midway after falling in love with superstar Kamal Haasan and deciding to marry him.

Speaking on the YouTube channel Hindi Rush, Singh shared how Sarika’s sudden departure disrupted the show’s production. “When I was doing TV show Chhapte Chhapte, Sarika was starring with me. She fell in love with someone in Madras. So, she left the show midway when we shooting. ‘Pilot banate banate humari stewardess toh bhag gae.'”

However, the turn of events ultimately worked in his favour as he met his future wife, Anuradha Patel, through the show. Anuradha Patel had replaced Sarika as the female lead on the show. “Then, now my wife, Anuradha Patel starred opposite me. Then we got close and got married,” he said.

Kamal Haasan was already married to Vani Ganapathy when he fell in love with Sarika. The two met on the sets of Raaj Tilak in 1984. Later, Kamal divorced his first wife and married Sarika in 1988. However, their relationship was controversial, as Sarika faced severe backlash for being labeled “the other woman.” Despite the criticism, the couple stood by each other and had two daughters—Shruti Haasan in 1986 and Akshara Haasan in 1991.

In an earlier interview with India Today, Sarika had expressed how she doesn’t regret marrying Kamal. “I have said this time and again… if given a chance, I would live my life exactly the way I have lived it because I think there have been very nice things. Whoever I am or wherever I am, all this is part of my life. Everything is nice at a point. Things go bad later otherwise, I would not have got up, left everything and gone,” she said.

However, Sarika and Kamal’s marriage didn’t last and they divorced in 2002.
