Director Subhash Kapoor pulled off a casting coup when he got the two Jollys from the first two instalments of his hit Jolly LLB franchise — Arshad Warsi and Akshay Kumar, respectively — to join forces for the threequel, Jolly LLB 3. While the third part has been performing better than the previous two, and has far surpassed the lifetime domestic business of Jolly LLB (2013), it can’t sustain the same rate of growth as Jolly LLB 2 (2017) after five days of release.
On Tuesday (day 5), Jolly LLB 3 earned Rs 6.5 crore, an improvement on its Monday (day 4) collection of Rs 5.5 crore. But that was a major fall from its Sunday (day 3) earnings of Rs 21 crore, a minor spike from its Saturday (day 2) collection of Rs 20 crore. The film opened at Rs 12.5 crore on Friday. Now, as per industry tracker Sacnilk, the current box office collection of the courtroom comedy in India is Rs 65.5 crore.
While it’s growing steadily, the rate of increase in the domestic box office collections is no longer higher than that of its predecessor. Within the first five days of release back in 2017, Jolly LLB 2, headlined by Akshay and also helmed by Kapoor, garnered Rs 66.79 crore in India. While the threequel scored a higher opening weekend, it can’t sustain the same momentum on the weekdays any longer.
Jolly LLB 3 has now surpassed the domestic box office collection of a few other Bollywood films of this year, including Sidharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor’s romantic comedy Param Sundari (Rs 54.73 crore) and Anurag Basu’s musical romance Metro… In Dino (Rs 56.3 crore). The next target is to surpass the domestic box office collection of A Harsha’s action thriller Baaghi 4, starring Tiger Shroff, which made Rs 66.63 crore.
Jolly LLB 3 also stars Saurabh Shukla, Huma Qureshi, and Amrita Rao, who reprise their roles from the previous instalments. The new entrants include Gajraj Rao as the chief antagonist, along with Seema Biswas. The film is produced by Star Studio 18, and reunites Akshay and Arshad three years after Farhad Samji’s action comedy Bachchhan Paandey.
Like the previous two instalments, Jolly LLB 3 was also at the receiving end of legal trouble. A petition filed in the Bombay High Court, among others, sought a stay on the release of the movie and also deletion of the song, “Bhai Vakeel Hai”, which it claimed was derogatory towards the legal profession.
The petitioner’s lawyer said the movie and song make a mockery of not just lawyers but also judges, as in a scene, the judges are referred to as “mamu“, a slang he said was derogatory and insulting to the judiciary. “We have been facing mockery since day one. Don’t worry about us,” the court said, dismissing the plea. A similar plea against the movie was filed before the Allahabad High Court, which was dismissed as well.
