Amid rising anger across the country fuelled by the Kolkata doctor rape-murder case, comments made by actor John Abraham in a recent interview have resurfaced. John said that women, children and animals are the most oppressed members of Indian society. Appearing on Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast recently, the actor said that as true patriot, it is his responsibility to criticise the failings of his country.
John said, “Women, children and animals are not safe in India. It is sad. Indian men need to understand how to treat their women. Yeh bohot important hai. Har aurat ke liye, ek aadmi ko ek rakshak hona chahiye (It’s important for Indian men to learn how to treat women. They need to be protectors).”
Noting the difference between patriotism and jingoism, John said, “Because I love India, it’s essential for me to criticise it. There’s a difference between patriotism and jingoism. Simply saying ‘India is great’ doesn’t make you a true lover of the country. You become a true patriot when you work to bring change to society. My only goal in life is to make a change in society within my small world. I want to give animals a better status. The condition of animals in India is getting worse. It’s tragic that no laws have been enacted for their safety.”
Protests were staged across the country after a doctor in Kolkata was allegedly raped and murdered earlier this month. Her death was initially presented as a suicide, but further investigation suggested a mass coverup. John was recently seen in the film Vedaa, in which he plays a protector figure to a young Dalit woman who is abused by upper caste men.
