Dimple Kapadia was only 15 when she got married to Rajesh Khanna, who was almost twice her age and also the biggest superstar in the country at the time. Soon after, the couple had two daughters but the marriage did not last long as they went their separate ways. Dimple and Rajesh separated but never divorced but for Dimple, this marriage was “traumatic.”
In a 1994 interview with Pritish Nandy, Dimple opened up about her marriage with Rajesh and shared the reasons as to why it did not work out between them. “I think we were two very different kind of people. And I was probably very young to understand what was happening to this man who was a superstar. I mean I have never been able to understand stars and their behaviour pattern at all because I am not one myself. It’s very difficult for me to… I couldn’t understand it. I just couldn’t understand it.”
When asked if she remembered this period of her life, Dimple said it was “very clear” and when the interviewer asked if “it was traumatic,” Dimple simply said, “Yes it was.” Rajesh Khanna was at the peak of his career when he married Dimple but as it happens with stardom, it started to fade. Rajesh, it is said, did not deal well with his failures and it started to seep into his marriage as well.
In another chat, Dimple had once shared that she was quite naive when she fell in love with Rajesh Khanna and actually believed that he would sing songs to her, just like he did in the movies and when that did not happen, she was “shattered.” “I swear I am not lying, because I was so young. And there was such an impact of the movies. Toh jab mountains pe pohanche aur gaana bhi nahi hua, hawa bhi nahi chali toh meri toh haalat kharab ho gayi (So when we reached on the mountains but there was no song and no gust of wind, I was in a bad state) because my dream was shattered. Because I seriously believed it. I mean how dumb can you get? But well that was me,” she said while talking at FICCI FLO Jaipur Chapter a few years ago.
Rajesh Khanna passed away in 2012 at age 69. The couple never reconciled but they never divorced either.
