Anurag Kashyap and Imtiaz Ali’s daughters recall when they were held hostage by a house help who was robbing them: ‘She tied our hands, taped our mouths’

Aaliyah Kashyap and Ida Ali recall how they were once held hostage at Aaliyah's house by a house help who was trying to rob them.

Anurag Kashyap’s daughter Aaliyah Kashyap and Imtiaz Ali’s daughter Ida Ali grew up together and they describe their relationship as sisters, more than best friends. In a recent podcast, the women spoke about the time when they were both held hostage as children by a house help who worked at their house and was trying to rob the place. Aaliyah recalled how the woman put tape on their mouths and tied their hands to a chair during the robbery as the girls were “freaking out”.

Ida was a guest on Aaliyah’s podcast Young, Dumb & Anxious podcast where they spoke about “trauma bonding” and recalled the “kidnapping story”. Aaliyah said that they were “not kidnapped technically because we were at home. We were a part of a robbery,” but Ida added that they “don’t know what could have happened” as they “were taken hostages”.

Aaliyah Kashyap said that at that point, they were both living in the same building and since both their parents were going out together, the kids were at Anurag Kashyap’s house being watched over by Aaliyah’s maternal grandmother. “Her parents and my parents were going out together somewhere and she (Ida) was staying at my house and my nani was there. My nani was watching us and so was our didi, who was working in our house at the time,” she recalled.

Aaliyah said that their house help locked her grandmother in one room and tied up the girls to a chair. “She locked my nani in the room in the evening after my parents left. She taped Ida and my mouth, tied our hands to a chair. We were crying and freaking out because we thought we are going to die. So basically she was stealing stuff from the house. She was stealing jewellery and money or whatever was in house,” she shared.

But just 15 minutes into this experience, Aaliyah’s mother returned as she had forgotten something at the house and walked in on a hostage scene. “Thankfully, my mom had left something and she came back like 15-20 minutes later to pick it up and she saw everything that had happened and she called her parents, my Dad everyone back and they like freaked out. It was obviously traumatic but it would have bene a lot more traumatic if we went through that alone,” she shared.

Ida Ali added that now that when she looks back at it, “it’s a fun story that we share” and Aaliyah said that they now “laugh about” this episode.
