A 30-year-old postgraduate student at the Pravara Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) at Loni in Ahilyanagar district of Maharashtra was found dead in his hostel room.

Police said that the deceased, Dr Vinod Kumar Goud, who hails from Telangana, is a second-year postgraduate student with the department of pediatrics at PIMS.

Police suspect it to be a case of suicide and have launched a probe into the incident.

According to police, Dr Goud’s colleagues called the PIMS staff after noticing that he was not opening his hostel room on the evening of September 27. The staffers then opened the room with their keys and found Dr Goud dead.

A team led by assistant police inspector Kailas Wagh of the Loni police station reached the spot.

“Dr Goud was pronounced dead around 6.45 pm on September 27. Post mortem of his body was conducted. As per the legal procedure, an accidental death report was filed at the Loni police station, “ said Wagh.

“Prima-facie, this appears to be a case of suicide. But there was no suicide note. An investigation is being done to confirm the cause behind the death. We are checking his mobile phone call records of the deceased. We are speaking to his colleagues and family members,” he added.

Meanwhile, Dr Goud’s death sparked an outrage among the doctors. Several messages were circulated on social media platforms alleging that Dr Goud faced humiliation by the head of the pediatrics department.

Subsequently, the authorities of the PIMS suspended the HOD of pediatrics department and launched an enquiry committee for probing the incident.

An official statement by the PIMS released on Monday said, “We are aware of messages circulating on social media regarding the incident. While we understand the emotions and concerns expressed, we respectfully urge everyone to refrain from drawing premature conclusions or spreading unverified allegations. Such messages, though well-intentioned, can cause additional distress to the bereaved family and may hinder a fair and thorough inquiry.”

It further stated that the management of the PIMS has constituted an enquiry committee with immediate effect into this incident.

“The institute is suspending the HOD Paediatrics till the submission of enquiry/fact finding committee report. The institute is fully cooperating with all statutory and regulatory bodies to ensure transparency. A confidential mechanism which is already in place will be further strengthened for students and staff to raise grievances without fear,” it stated.
