14 flight diverted as heavy rain disrupts operations at Pune Airport

Three of the flights returned to Pune later, said airport director Santosh Dhoke, adding that the operations normalised as the intensity of the rain decreased.

As many as 14 flights were diverted at the Pune International Airport between midnight and 8 am Monday due to heavy rain. Three of these flights later returned to Pune, said airport director Santosh Dhoke in a press release, adding that the operations returned to normal as the intensity of the rain reduced.

“The Indian Air Force (IAF) has extended their full support by permitting flight movements during the military block time (as per the NOTAM), ensuring smooth operations,” said the statement.

The Pune airport serves as both an international airport and an Indian Air Force base, known as Lohegaon Air Force Station. NOTAM, or Notice to Airmen, is an official notification from an aviation authority that informs pilots and other aviation personnel about hazards or temporary changes in flight operations, such as runway closures, airspace restrictions, or navigation aid issues.

Dhoke’s statement added, “The entire airport team, including AAI (Airports Authority of India), CISF (Central Industrial Security Force), airlines, and other stakeholders, has been working tirelessly to provide seamless facilitation to our esteemed passengers. Additional seating, drinking water, tea, coffee, and food arrangements were arranged to ensure passenger comfort during this period.”
