A 68-year-old woman was allegedly strangled to death by an unknown person inside her house in Jogeshwari (East), where she lived alone. The incident came to light around 11 pm on Thursday after neighbours, suspicious that she had not stepped out the entire day, used a spare key to open her door and found her lying dead on the floor.

“The strangulation marks were found on her neck,” a police officer said, adding that a robbery angle does not appear behind the murder in the preliminary investigation as cash of Rs 35,000 was found intact in the cupboard. “However, the family members are not aware about the deceased’s gold ornaments whether she has or not,” the official added.

The Meghwadi police have registered a case of murder against unknown persons and launched a manhunt based on technical evidence and human intelligence.

According to police, the deceased has been identified as Hawabi Dalvi (68), a resident of Bandra Plot at Jogeshwari. Her two daughters got married a few years ago and live in Pune and Ratnagiri. Dalvi was staying alone in the house.

The woman was last seen on Wednesday night around 10.30 pm, after which she returned home to sleep. “She did not come out the entire day on Thursday, so neighbours suspected foul play as her door was locked,” the official said.
Since a spare key was kept at a neighbour’s house, they opened the door and were shocked to find her body lying on the floor. Police were immediately informed. “It seems that she was killed on Wednesday night or in the wee hours on Thursday,” a police officer said.

Her daughters were informed, and based on her daughter’s statement, police registered a case of murder against an unknown person, the official added.

Eight police teams have been formed to trace the culprit. “There is CCTV in the vicinity but none of them is near the victim’s residence which could provide some leads. Several people in the area are being questioned and police are also scanning the footage to identify the culprit,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Datta Nalawade of Zone 10.
