A 12-year-old girl, who was declared brain dead following a rare autoimmune illness, has provided a new lease of life to four people in Mumbai through organ donation. According to Wadia Hospital in Parel, her kidneys, liver, and heart were sent to other hospitals for patients in need.
A resident of Santacruz, Vaidehi Bhau Tanavde suffered from low platelet counts, and was diagnosed with severe and rare disease called immune thrombocytopenia in September 2020. According to the Massachusetts-based National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD), immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an “autoimmune bleeding disorder characterized by abnormally low levels of blood cells called platelets, a situation referred to as thrombocytopenia”.
Initially treated in Kolhapur, Vaidehi came to the Nanavati Hospital in Mumbai, and then approached the Wadia Hospital. After suddenly vomiting blood, she was admitted to Wadia Hospital on the morning of July 13. A CT scan revealed severe intracranial bleeding with herniation, and she was declared brain dead.
Subsequently, her parents were urged to donate her organs to save the lives of others in need, and they agreed.
“What could be better than saving someone’s life through my daughter’s organ donation,” said her father Bhau Tanavde.
“I have been going around hospitals for the last three years for my daughter’s treatment. Small children are suffering from kidney failure. What fault is it of these innocent children? All parents are very worried about their children’s health. I lost my daughter, but I find solace in donating her organs, knowing that she gave new life to four people as she left,” Tanavde told The Indian Express.
“I want to express my gratitude to the doctors at Wadia Hospital who took great care of my child during treatment and kept our spirits high,” he added.
