At least 10 TISS students booked over G N Saibaba death anniversary event

Confirming the development, a police officer said an offence was registered on charges of causing prejudice to the nation, causing enmity between various groups, unlawful assembly, among others

TISS“No permission was taken from the Mumbai police for the event,” an officer said

The Mumbai police Monday registered an FIR against at least 10 students of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) for allegedly commemorating the death anniversary (October 12) of former Delhi University professor G N Saibaba, and raising slogans in support of former JNU students Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid currently behind bars in the Delhi riots case.

The FIR was registered on a complaint from the TISS administration.

Confirming the development, a police officer said an offence was registered on charges of causing prejudice to the nation, causing enmity between various groups, unlawful assembly, among others.

The officer said the students were booked and issued notices accordingly. “No permission was taken from the Mumbai police for the event,” the officer said.

Confirming the action against around 10 students, a senior TISS official, who didn’t want to be named, said, “The event was apparently organised to observe the death anniversary of G N Saibaba around 9 pm on Sunday. The administration was not aware of the event as the students had not sought any permission.”

“Additionally, it went unnoticed since it was a Sunday. It was brought to our notice on Monday through social media posts sharing photos and videos of the event, questioning the TISS administration for allowing the event… the social media posts also tagged Mumbai police and Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis,” the official added.

The TISS administration is also going to send show-cause notices to the students named in the FIR, it is learnt. “This is a regular process when rules and regulations of the institute are violated,” said the official.

In the social media posts, some students can be seen standing near a photograph of Saibaba.

Saibaba had been arrested under the UAPA for his alleged Naxal links but was acquitted after spending a decade behind bars. Saibaba passed away in Hyderabad on October 12 last year.
