A day after the Uttar Pradesh government sealed the borders of Ayodhya and Faizabad as part of a crackdown on VHPs proposed Sankalp Diwas,the police Friday arrested more than 2,100 people,including BJP MP Yogi Adityanath and several VHP leaders.
While VHP leaders claimed that sankalp sabhas were organised at more than 40 places in Ayodhya,the administration rubbished the claim.
DIG (Faizabad Range) B D Paulson said,No sankalp sabha could be held in Faizabad today,as more than 380 VHP activists from Faizabad were arrested and 150 of them,including senior leader Ram Vilas Vedanti,were sent to jail.
The government had banned sankalp sabhas,which VHP had announced to hold to take pledge for the construction of a Ram temple at the Ram Janmabhoomi in Ayodhya. VHP had announced to organise sankalp sabhas at over one lakh places across the country. In Lucknow,IG (law and order) R K Vishwakarma said the day was totally peaceful. The borders of twin towns of Ayodhya and Faizabad were sealed since Thursday as a precautionary measure but it was reopened for traffic in the evening,he added.
BJP MP Yogi Adityanath,former party MP Satyadev Singh and Hindu Yuva Vahini state president Raghvendra Singh were arrested from Vaishali Express train in Gonda and were kept under house arrest there. VHP international general secretary Champat Rai was arrested along with BJP MLA Ram Chander Yadav and 200 others in Ayodhya.
Moreover,while BJP youth wing state president Ashutosh Rai was arrested with the priest of Hanuman Gadhi in Ayodhya and 60 others. Former MP Ram Vilas Vendati,VHP leader Vinayakrao Deshpande and Rajendra Singh Pankaj were also arrested.
Rai,in a press statement,claimed that sankalp sabhas were organised successfully at about 40 temples in Ayodhya and around 5,000 Ram bhakts have courted arrest.
A two-day meeting of senior VHP leaders with nearly 700 saints has been called in Delhi from Saturday to decide on the next step,he added.
Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav said,Some people are making efforts to disturb brotherhood in the state. They are conspiring to vitiate the atmosphere. They willnot succeed. We will give such a befitting reply that they will never dare to conspire, he added.
Earlier,the state government had foiled 84-kosi parikrama and 5-kosi parikrama that VHP had announced to take out around Ram Janmabhoomi in
August,September and
October.
