Nandigram: CID yet to make headway in probe

After the High Court last month directed the CID to investigate into the case of seven persons having gone missing from Nandigram since 2007 and file a report on November 18

After the High Court last month directed the CID to investigate into the case of seven persons having gone missing from Nandigram since 2007 and file a report on November 18,the investigating agency is reportedly yet to make much progress in the case despite camping in the area.

Significantly, the CID which took over the case from the district police, did not visit the area until the High Court,on September 30,ordered the CID to find the missing persons.

Following a habeus corpus petition filed by Anjali Singh and six others whose husbands were missing since November 11,2007,the bench of Chief Justice J N Patel and Justice A K Ray ordered the CID to investigate the case and file a report in court on November 18.

The case came up for hearing on September 15. The petition stated that on November 11,2007 ,the people of Nandigram took part in a rally by the Bhumi Ucched Protirod Committee. It was alleged that CPM-backed criminals fired at the rally after which 42 persons went missing. Later, most of them except seven persons returned. The petition sought information about their whereabouts.

K Jayaraman,DIG,CID said,“Our team is camping in Nandigram. They have visited the villages and started investigation. We have got few names who are behind the incident. We are looking into the matter.”

According to sources, the CID team has collected evidences and identified witnesses who will be produced in the court on November 18.

“We have got several evidences against Lakshman Seth, the then district secretary of east Midnapore . Seth was the mastermind of the abduction. The ruling party also influenced the district police not to investigate into the missing complaints lodged by the kins of the victims,” said a senior CID official pleading anonymity.
