Noida authority to propose acquiring land at market rates

Officials said the objective was to give farmers a good deal.

In a board meeting on August 12, Noida authority officials are planning to propose acquiring land from farmers at rates matching the market rates, which are almost double the amount of compensation that the farmers are given now.

“Currently, farmers are offered around Rs 2,000 per square metre (as compensation), after the Allahabad High Court ordered an increment of almost 64 per cent. But the market rates are almost double. Due to this, many farmers end up selling land to private builders, which leads to the development of irregular and unauthorised colonies. Then the authority has to go through long and messy legal tangles to acquire that land again,” an official said.

The official said the objective was to give farmers a good deal, while also saving them from “troubles associated with dealing with private builders”.

“We want betterment of farmers, while also ensuring that the land can be acquired easily. If the authority is ready to give them such a lucrative deal, why will they go elsewhere,” an official said.

However, according to another official, less than 10 per cent land under Noida’s jurisdiction is still left to be acquired by authority. “Noida is saturated. Hardly any land is left to be acquired,” the official said.
