Ensure safety of woman lawyer allegedly manhandled by police: SC to police chief

The vacation bench, in the meantime, has ordered that policemen attached to Lajpat Nagar police station not to summon any witness in the case without its permission. This interim directive was passed as senior advocate Vijay Hansaria, who has been appointed amicus curiae in the matter, alleged that witnesses were being “harassed” by police.

The court had earlier taken suo motu cognizance of a letter written by the woman lawyer alleging that some policemen and others manhandled her inside Lajpat Nagar police station on April 4 when she went there to serve a copy of a judicial order. The bench had asked the police chief to submit the action taken report on the complaint of lawyer.

However, a fresh plea was moved a day ago, seeking transfer of the probe to the CBI in the wake of Delhi Police personnel allegedly threatening the witnesses in the case. The application also raised apprehension that the woman lawyer would be framed in a false case since she got calls, which she did not attend, from unknown Pakistan numbers on her mobile phone.
