Rs 16 cr wonder drug brings smiles back for Hyderabad family

A few hours after taking the single-dose intravenous injection of Zolgensma, considered the world’s most expensive medical drug, three-year-old Ayaansh told his parents he would like to walk and come home. Rupal and Yogesh Gupta, the boy’s parents for whom it was the most memorable day of their lives, broke down hearing these words.

“Every mother wants to see her child walking and running. I never got to see that,” the 34-year-old mother said recalling those moments from June 9.

Ayaansh has not been a regular boy, after having missed almost all developmental milestones in a child’s growth. It was a few days after his first birthday, on June 4, 2018, that Ayaansh was diagnosed with a rare genetic disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy(SMA), a life-threatening progressive condition. Not only were treatment options not available in the country, but the drug also cost Rs 16 crore despite the Center’s waiver of import duty and GST running into a few crores. “While leaving the hospital, Rupal and I recalled our situation two years ago when we knew about SMA for the first time. We hope our son can now lead a normal life. That is all that we wanted,” said Yogesh Gupta (35).

A wedding in Tamil Nadu goes viral, proving that there's a lot in a name

This is neither satire nor allegory. A groom called Socialism and a bride called Mamata Banerjee have tied the knot. As they solemnised their union on Sunday under the sickle and hammer, brothers of the groom, Communism and Leninism, looked on. This grand alliance, though, did not take place in West Bengal. In fact, the fates seem to have a sense of narrative consistency: The marriage took place in Salem district in a state ruled by Stalin.

Socialism is the third son of the Salem Communist Party of India district secretary, A Mohan. His two elder children are named after high-minded party principles as well. Mamata’s grandfather is responsible for her name — he was a fan of the now three-term Chief Minister of West Bengal. Social media, and even its more analogue counterparts, took great interest in the nuptials ever since the wedding card went viral last week. And why not? “Mamata Banerjee marries Socialism” is a great headline, and even better clickbait. Then, there’s the fact that many a left sympathiser, and quite a few liberals, had hoped that the Left Front and Trinamool Congress would bury their hostilities and ally in West Bengal to defeat the BJP before the elections. They wouldn’t have known that their wish, albeit in a symbolic and belated manner, would come true in Tamil Nadu.

“The School Education Department only has Kalvi TV now as the medium to reach a large number of students for classes. Connectivity issues prevail at many places but as far as possible, teachers are trying to reach out to students through WhatsApp. Even for those who don’t possess a smartphone, we made necessary arrangements like involving them in initiatives like group studies. We can take a call on reopening the schools only after witnessing how these lockdown relaxations play out. We cannot put all the students in one class, we need to maintain social distancing. Several people from other schools want to enroll their wards in government schools, we need to create a space for that as well,” he said.

Drones for vaccines: Telangana explores ‘Medicines from Sky’

With the focus moving to delivering vaccines in difficult to reach areas, the Centre and state governments are taking the drone route to get to such terrains. On one hand, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has sought bids from drone operators to supply medicines and vaccines; on the other, the Telangana government has launched a project to check delivery feasibility of medical supplies. Companies with logistics experience including Flipkart and Dunzo have announced their consortia under Telangana’s drone delivery scheme to develop and execute drone deliveries there.

In a statement announcing its participation in the Telangana government’s ‘Medicines from Sky Project’, Flipkart said: “As part of the consortium, Flipkart will utilise learnings from its tech-enabled supply chain to deploy drones and enable deliveries of vaccines and medical supplies”.

“A combination of these technologies will then be used to conduct BVLOS deliveries in remote areas of the state where the road infrastructure is not conducive for fast delivery of vaccines. The pilot, which is expected to be conducted for over six days, will be tested out for delivering thousands of vaccines while keeping in mind all the safety and efficiency parameters,” it added.

More COVID-19 deaths than what Modi govt acknowledges: Owaisi

AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday alleged that the number of deaths due to COVID-19 in the country is more than what the NDA government acknowledges. He claimed that the government was hiding the truth.

"Modi government says so many deaths have not taken place due to COVID....they have lost connection with the sufferings of ordinary people of the country and the deaths. They are totally aloof," he told reporters in Hyderabad.

He cited media reports which talked about the high number of deaths in the country during the second wave of COVID-19. He also referred to claims that more death certificates were being issued during the second wave compared to the first.

The AIMIM president alleged that the government has not done proper preparation for the second wave and that it delayed orders for vaccination. These failures have led to a large number of deaths, he claimed. BJP is not ready to accept the reality to hide its failures, he alleged. (PTI)

Women trained in 'Agama Sastra’ – the manual for worship and rituals at temples – can be appointed as temple priests, Tamil Nadu minister in charge of Hindu temples’ administration Sekar Babu said on Sunday, a day after his remarks on opening temple doors to women priests triggered debates in the state.

“When media persons asked me [on Saturday] whether women will be allowed to take up the role of temple priests, I said those who are trained in Agama Sastra will be allowed. If there are requests or grievances from women who would love to take up the role of temple priests, we will definitely consider them. The criteria would be their expertise in Agama tradition. If there are such requests, they may be given necessary training and interviewed before we absorb them,” Babu told The Indian Express.
