All schools in Punjab, both government and private, will remain closed from August 27 to 30 (Wednesday to Saturday) due to heavy rain and flooding.
Announcing the decision, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann posted on X, “For the past few days, heavy rain has been occurring, and the weather department has forecasted very heavy rainfall for the next few days as well. In view of this, all primary, secondary, senior secondary government and private schools in the state will remain closed from August 27 to 30.”
At least 10 districts of Punjab—Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Ferozepur, Fazilka, Jalandhar, Rupnagar, Gurdaspur, Pathankot, SBS Nagar, Fazilka—are grappling with massive floods amid heavy rain in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.
Earlier Tuesday, in view of the worsening flood situation in Punjab, deputy commissioners in several districts had ordered the closure of all educational institutions in inundated areas.
Meanwhile, CM Mann’s attendance at an event in Tamil Nadu Tuesday, while several areas of Punjab are affected by floods, led to criticism from the Opposition. They said he was abandoning the state while people are suffering.
Sarabjeet Singh Jhinjer, national president, Youth Akali Dal (YAD) wrote on X: “When Rome was burning, Nero played the flute! Punjab is reeling under severe floods, with the situation only projected to worsen in the coming days. Farmers are fighting with their own hands to save their crops and homes, yet our CM Bhagwant Mann is busy holidaying with his family in Tamil Nadu. Such spineless and insensitive leadership is pushing Punjab into deeper misery!”
Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira wrote on X, “The quote “Nero played the flute while Rome burnt” aptly fits on @BhagwantMann who’s busy touring Tamil Nadu with family while Punjab is suffering from fury of statewide floods ! We @INCIndia demand immediate flood relief measures including compensation for crop losses,Livestock and property damage.”
Attending the launch of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme’s expansion to urban schools in Chennai, Mann said Punjab will consider replicating the breakfast scheme.
