The long-pending demand of city bus service in Mohali seems to be close to reality as the district administration has started the feasibility survey to identify the possible routes which could connect the district.
During a meeting of District Road Safety Committee on Thursday, the project was discussed in detail. It was also mooted that electric vehicles will be used to reduce pollution. The proposal also mentioned reducing the traffic chaos on city roads. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Aashika Jain said that the EVs would be pressed into service to reduce pollution and save environment.
“The survey is in progress and soon the bus service will become a reality in the district,” the DC said.
During the meeting it was discussed that major nodes of Mohali, Kharar, Zirakpur, Dera Bassi, Eco-City-1 and Nayagaon will be connected in the first phase of the project. The average route length will be 29 km and initially nine-midi buses shall be operated.
It was also discussed in the meeting that about 120 buses required for maintaining 15-minute headway.
“We welcome it and hope that the bus service shall soon become a reality,” Mohali Deputy Mayor Kuljeet Bedi said. He added that the city bus service has been desired by city residents for long, and that it is unfortunate that city does not have any bus service, despite Mohali getting changed so much in the last 15 years.
Meanwhile, Mohali residents also shared their plight on the absence of public transportation in Mohali, adding that a sound bus service was the need of the hour.
“The city has become an IT hub, but in the absence of a city bus service, the employees face issues. The city bus service shall help the smooth travel for these people, said Anil Kumar Jha, an IT professional.
Arun Kumar, a retired police inspector said that currently only auto-rickshaws are only the mode of transport in the city, which is not as safe as a bus. “Chandigarh has a very good bus service, a senior citizen can go to hospitals easily but in Mohali, it becomes difficult,” Kumar concluded.
