A retired employee of the Gurdaspur Municipal Committee,Gopal Singh, has been running from pillar to post to get his dues of Dearness Allowance (DA) for over a year but his successive complaints have failed to draw any response from the authorities.

He even approached the district court and a judgment was also announced in his favour but the government is yet to wake up to his pleas.

Gopal,an ex-serviceman,was re-employed as a driver with the MC in 2001 but was denied the DA despite the rules that since he was not receiving the allowance from his previous employer,he was entitled for the same at the new post. “I wrote numerous letters to Director,Local Government but received no response. The Civil Judge Gurdaspur,in a judgment on August 8,2008,ordered that my dues should be cleared within six months, but to no avail,” said Gopal Singh.

The total dues,he said, amount to Rs 45,000 after he joined the MC but the department paid him only Rs 11,000,claiming it to be the full settlement of the dues. “Now I am thinking of approaching the court again with a contempt plea,” he said, adding that he has never been paid the full salary.

Director Local Government,S K Sharma, said he was not aware of the issue but it should have been settled at the lower level.

He,however, assured justice to Gopal Singh and promised to take appropriate steps soon.
