Karnataka State Commission for Women president Nagalakshmi Chowdhary on Monday gave a 15-day deadline to the Kannada Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) to come up with an action plan for putting together a committee against sexual harassment or give reasons why it is not possible to do it.

Chowdhary held a meeting with senior artists and producers, including N M Suresh, President, KFCC, Sa Ra Govindu, producer and former KFCC president, producer Rockline Venkatesh, filmmaker Kavitha Lankesh, and actors Bhavana Ramanna, Sanjana Galrani, Neetu, and Chetan. Many others were not present at the meeting as they were participating in the South Indian International Movie Awards (SIIMA) ceremony in Dubai.

The Karnataka women’s commission gave a 17-point agenda to address sexual and other forms of exploitation within the Kannada film industry. The Prevention of Sexual Harassment (PoSH) committee is mandatory to address complaints of sexual harassment in the workplace and ensure women’s safety.

According to a member of the chamber who was part of the meeting, KFCC was against the idea of constituting a judicial committee similar to the Justice K Hema Committee, which conducted a probe into the Malayalam industry, saying it would bring a ‘negative’ image for the industry. “The industry wants to have control over the complaints if filed and do not want external agencies to interfere in their business,” the source said.
