In an attempt to end block money and corruption in the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced demonetisation of high-value currency notes on November 8, 2016. After Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the decision to scrap old notes, banks on the next day were directed to remain shut in order to stock lower denomination cash and new Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 notes.
