Beating the so called anti-incumbency wave, Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congres is all set to return to power in West Bengal for the third time as the party as leading on over 200 out of 294 seats, way over the victory mark of 147, leaving the BJP trailing behind in 81 seats, as per the last update by the Election Commission.
Dedicating the victory to the people of Bengal, Mamata said combating the COVID-19 situation will be the topmost priority of her government. “For us, combating the COVID-19 situation will be the topmost priority… This is victory of Bengal and only Bengal can do it ,” she said in her brief message to party workers
BJP national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya declared victory for his rival. “The TMC won because of Mamata Banerjee. It seems people have chosen Didi. We will introspect what went wrong, whether it was organisational issues, lack of face, insider-outsider debate,” he said, adding that he was shocked to see BJP MPs Babul Supriyo and Locket Chatterjee trailing.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray congratulated the “Bengal tigress” for “single-handedly” leading her party to victory.
In a statement, Thackeray said Banerjee led the fight for Bengal’s self-respect single-handedly, adding that “all credit goes to the Bengal tigress for the win”.
Thackeray, who heads the Shiv Sena, said the prime minister, Union home minister, ministers from the Centre and several states descended on WB to defeat Banerjee.
“But she defeated all these forces. I congratulate her and the courageous people of Bengal,” he said.
In the 294-strong West Bengal Assembly, polling was held in 292 seats. Due to the death of two candidates, polling in two seats of Murshidabad district will be held on May 16.
