Trump calls for cap on foreign students at Harvard, accuses university of ‘disrespect’

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday proposed a cap on the number of foreign students at Harvard University, saying the Ivy League institution should limit international admissions to 15 per cent.

“Harvard has got to behave themselves. Harvard is treating our country with great disrespect and all they’re doing is getting in deeper and deeper,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.

He also said the university should share its current list of international students with the administration, though he did not specify what action might follow.

Trump’s clash with Harvard, which began during last year’s pro-Palestinian campus protests, has evolved into a sweeping ideological offensive against elite higher education. He has repeatedly attacked top US universities as breeding grounds for “Marxist maniacs and lunatics” and suggested on Monday that he might redirect federal funds from institutions like Harvard to trade schools instead.

Backed by Congressional Republicans, Trump’s stance has translated into concrete financial threats. Lawmakers have approved new taxes on large university endowments—pending Senate approval—which could cost Harvard an estimated $850 million per year.

The stakes are especially high for Harvard, where international students make up over 25 per cent of its 6,800 student body.
