At least five people were injured in a shooting at a mall in Waterbury, Connecticut on Tuesday night, police officials said. According to initial reports, the shooting took place at the Brass Mill Center and the suspect is yet to be arrested.

Waterbury Police chief Fernando Spagnolo said that officers responded to reports of disturbance from Brass Mill Center at about 4:40pm and added that all the victims were being treated at a hospital, declining to detail about the extent of their injuries or seriousness.

Police confirmed that there was no immediate threat to the public. “We do not believe this was a random act of violence. We believe this started as a conflict and escalated,” police chief Spagnolo said at a press briefing outside of the Connecticut mall on Tuesday.

He added that the suspect, who had a semiautomatic pistol, knew the victims and shooting episode took place after a dispute which quickly escalated. Spagnolo added that police are yet to make any arrests in the case and there were no fatalities in the case, except for some of those wounded.

“We are working in the mall now with our law enforcement partners from all the federal agencies, the state police, conducting this investigation,” Spagnolo added. The police chief said that authorities are going store-by-store looking for evidence.

The Brass Mill Center, where the shootout took place, is located off Interstate 84 in Waterbury, 30 miles (about 50 kilometers) southwest of Hartford.

Waterbury Police, in a statement on Facebook said, “We urge the public to avoid the area to allow emergency personnel to respond effectively and ensure everyone’s safety.”
