As floods in Pakistan leave over 650 dead, here’s all you need to know about the situation

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed federal ministers to personally oversee relief work in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa where at least 323 people have died.

Pakistan has been grappling with one of the deadliest monsoons in recent years with over 650 people being killed in rain-related incidents since June 26, according to local newspaper Dawn.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has voiced sorrow over the mounting human toll from the recent flash floods in Pakistan. In a statement issued by his spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric on Sunday, Guterres extended condolences to the families of the victims and expressed solidarity with all those affected. “The UN Country Teams are at the disposal of the Governments to provide necessary assistance,” the statement read, according to PTI.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) confirmed ongoing rescue efforts, supported by military helicopters, while Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed federal ministers to personally oversee relief work in the flood-hit province.

    Over 650 dead nationwide

    Since late June, 657 people have died across Pakistan in rain-related incidents, NDMA data shows. These include 171 children and 94 women.

    Khyber Pakhtunkhwa worst-hit

    The province has reported 323 deaths and 150 missing, making it the epicenter of the disaster. Relief operations there are being closely monitored by federal ministers on the Prime Minister’s orders.

    Food and utility shortages in Gilgit-Baltistan

    In Gilgit-Baltistan, flash floods have cut off villages, damaged farmland, and blocked key highways, leaving communities without electricity, water, and internet access. Residents staged protests in Gilgit city over prolonged shortages.

    NDMA warning of more rain in September

    Officials cautioned that two to three more heavy rain spells are expected next month, raising fears of further flooding.

    The River Sutlej is currently at low flood levels near Ganda Singhwala and Sulemanki, with flows around 70,000–74,000 cusecs. Authorities warn that levels above 120,000 cusecs could trigger moderate flooding.
