Who is Tarun Ghulati, the London mayoral candidate challenging Sadiq Khan?

Londoners will vote to elect a new mayor and 25 members for the London Assembly on May 2. Among the candidates, Tarun Ghulati, a Delhi-born investment banker has challenged the incumbent Sadiq Khan, who has already served two terms.

But who is Tarun Ghulati?

63-year-old Tarun Ghulati is the only Indian-origin candidate among the 13 individuals competing for the position of the mayor.

As per his Linkedin profile, Ghulati was educated at the University of Jaipur and went on to earn his MBA from Delhi University.

The 63-year-old has lived across countries in Asia Pacific, Middle East, Africa and the UK, and worked in 6 countries, primarily with Citibank and HSBC, where he served as an International Manager (IM).

At present,  he is the President and CEO of Squared Watermelon Ltd, a London-based company. He is also the longest serving Committee member and former Deputy Chairman of the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry Asian Business Association. 

Additionally, Ghulati is part of the Strategic Advisory Committee Member, Global Cyber Alliance with United Nations ECOSOC Special Consultative Status, which “entails working internationally to help in eradicating cyber risk and improving our connected world”, according to his official website. In his campaign pitch, he noted that one of his focal points for the city would be to ensure it’s more “digitally connected”, reported BBC.

“People want someone different to run London and I’m different because I’m not a politician,” the report quoted Gulati as saying.

As someone who was born and grew up in India, he aims to work on building community cohesion in London as he feels that “many communities are isolated and people don’t feel a sense of belonging”, reported BBC.
