New Delhi’s weather woes continued on Thursday as dense fog and poor air quality gripped the region, with visibility in parts of the city dropping to zero meters, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The Air Quality Index (AQI) remains in the “poor” category at 278, exacerbating the already challenging conditions.

The fog has been particularly severe around Palam, where visibility reached zero since the early hours of the morning. The capital’s temperatures remain low, with a minimum of 8°C and a maximum of 17°C. The fall in minimum temperatures over the past 24 hours has been notable, dipping by 2°C in many parts of Delhi and its neighboring regions. Strong westerly winds, clocking speeds of 8-12 km/h, intensified the fog overnight, according to IMD officials.

At Delhi’s international airport, operations are ongoing, but passengers are being warned of potential delays. The airport has issued an advisory for flights, noting that those not equipped with Category III (CAT III) instrumentation for low-visibility landings may be affected.

The Western Himalayan region is already experiencing temperatures below freezing, with lows of -0.8°C recorded in many areas of Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh. (PTI)

Meanwhile, the IMD has issued several alerts across northern and central India as cold wave conditions and dense fog persist. Cold to severe cold conditions are forecast for Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and isolated parts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh through Thursday. Dense fog is expected during the late-night and early-morning hours across these areas, including Odisha, while warnings extend to parts of Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh, where conditions are expected to last until Friday.

The region is already experiencing temperatures below freezing, with lows of -0.8°C recorded in many areas of Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh. In contrast, temperatures across Northwest India are slightly higher, ranging between 4-9°C, though a rise of 3-5°C is expected in the coming days.

As northern India grapples with these extreme weather patterns, the forecast calls for continued cold and foggy conditions through Friday, with some improvements expected in the days ahead. (PTI)

For travellers, the dense fog is posing significant disruptions. Flight delays and reduced visibility on roads and railways could lead to difficult driving conditions, as well as possible delays in train services. The dense fog is also raising concerns over power lines, with potential outages in areas most affected by low visibility.

The IMD has also issued a fishermen’s advisory for the Gulf of Mannar and the adjoining Comorin region, warning against venturing into the waters until at least Saturday due to adverse weather conditions.

Health experts are urging caution, as prolonged exposure to the cold can lead to respiratory issues and flu-like symptoms. Dense fog also contributes to high pollution levels, which can irritate the eyes and aggravate infections. Authorities recommend limiting outdoor activities and dressing warmly to mitigate the effects of the persistent cold and foggy conditions.
