People find it difficult to resume their careers after taking a break for a few years as recruiters often ask them about the gap in their resumes. Women find it especially difficult to resume their careers and find a suitable position after taking a break to raise their children.
While everyone mentions their previous jobs on their resumes, no one counts the time they spent as a homemaker as valuable experience on their CV. Yugansh Chokra, founder of content marketing company Growthic, shared how he received a resume from a woman who listed 13 years of experience as a homemaker.
The woman has been a homemaker since August 2009 and she mentioned various responsibilities she looked after in that role. From executing daily routines in a punctual manner to helping her two children with their homework, projects, overall growth and development as well as extra-curricular activities, she listed them on her resume.
“We saw this CV, she has 13 years of experience as a homemaker. Definitely, something that can make her stand out. And the reason I love this is because managing a family is a real task, something that can’t be undervalued. Less than 20% of women in India are working in a professional capacity. Gender gaps in housework participation are the largest among couples with children. It’s a real job, you can’t just discount the amount of work someone has to do to manage a family. Thoughts on this type of CV?” Chokra wrote on LinkedIn.
“Managing a household really is a full-time job. It’s great to see this experience being highlighted on a CV,” a user commented. “Mentioning Homemaker as an experience is noteworthy and this truly reflects the open mindset of the person to be able to add qualitative value to something which is usually sidelined and considered a minimal task by the society,” another said.
