For the longest time, the saree was seen as a restrictive outfit and unfit for sports or adventure activities. However, more and more people are doing all kinds of tasks draped in the six yards.
Earlier this month, Katya Saini a licensed Scuba diving instructor, shared a video that showed her kite surfing in a saree.
Her video has gathered over two lakh likes since it was posted on July 10. While many people were impressed with her skills, others pointed out that doing adventure sports in a saree can be dangerous.
Expressing the former sentiment, an Instagram user wrote, “Now THIS is cross culture!! I love this. You are amazing!!!!”.
Echoing the opposite sentiment, an Instagram user wrote, “What you have shown here is not recommended at all. It’s highly dangerous. There are outfits for sports for a reason, not for fashion or statement. Loose and extra clothing can get stuck and even result in a life altering accident. Not sure who thought of the idea of this promotion. It’s surprising that you don’t consider safety while promoting something.!”.
An Instagram user even joked, saying, “This is how my boss expects me to travel to work when it’s raining heavily and streets are flooded”.
In February, a similar video went viral. Instagram user Shy Nu (@yathrikan_200) shared a clip that showed a 67-year-old woman, clad in a saree, unflinchingly riding the rope cycle as if it was the most casual thing in the world.
