
Landslides caused by torrential rain killed at least 26 people in Kerala’s Wayanad district early on Tuesday. Industrialist Anand Mahindra shared photos of the flora and fauna of Wayanad and called the trail of destruction a tragedy.
Reacting to the unfortunate incident on X, Mahindra wrote, “Wayanad is a paradise on earth. To see it devastated by landslides with many lives lost is a tragedy. Our hearts are with the people of Wayanad and we will do whatever we can in the relief effort.”

Several social media users shared condolences for the lives lost in the landslides. “Yes, such a heartbreak indeed, let’s pray for wayanad,” a user wrote. “A tragic incident. Deepest condolences for the lives lost and heartfelt prayers for the injured,” another user wrote.
Expressing grief, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced Rs 2 lakh compensation for the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured. Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, meanwhile, expressed anguish over the incident, and urged United Democratic Front (UDF) workers and Union ministers to assist in the rescue operations.
Extending his heartfelt condolences, Rahul Gandhi wrote on X, “I am deeply anguished by the massive landslides near Meppadi in Wayanad. My heartfelt condolences go out to the bereaved families who have lost their loved ones. I hope those still trapped are brought to safety soon.”
According to officials, many people were feared washed away in the Chaliyar River in the Nilambur region of Malappuram as landslides struck hilly areas near Meppadi early in the morning.
