Crimes against women have witnessed an uptick over the years and it ranges from catcalling on the streets to heinous offences. When a girl student was apparently catcalled by her fellow male classmates, a history teacher Babita gave a powerful speech to prevent them from such behaviours.
In a widely shared clip on social media, the teacher is heard saying in Hindi, “There should be a limit… behave with women the way you want women in your family to be treated.” She discusses karma and adds that their mothers, sister and female relatives will see similar behaviour as they dole out to women around them.
Bringing forth the example of an advertisement, she says the ad depicted a youngster whistling. However, his mother chides him as she remembers a man whistling at her when she steps out of her home. The teacher adds that older women are also not spared from harassment and says that our sons need to be taught to behave, just like we teach our daughters.
Advising them to behave well, she urges them to behave as if one feels like sitting next to them. She also tells them to make sure that no one feels hurt by their comments.
“In her own way, this teacher gave a very important lesson of respect to the boys in her class,” read the caption of the clip shared by Twitter user Anjali B.
Since being shared on Monday, the clip has amassed more than 2.6 lakh views on Twitter. A user commented, “A very good lesson imparted by her as a teacher.” Another user wrote, “Fluency in thoughts and powerful speech , well done ma’am 👏, she is not just an ordinary teacher but a Guru … I like the way she told everything in a simple manner without raising her voice even once.” A third user wrote, “What goes around, comes around….directly or indirectly.”
