An influencer, who posts videos on fashion, beauty, and travel on Instagram, has come under criticism for following “regressive customs” when it comes to menstruation.
Rupal Mitul Shah, who is based in Surat, had posted a video on her Instagram account (@roopalshahshah) last month that showed her family having lunch on an ostentatious dining table at their new home where they had just shifted. She said it was their first family lunch since shifting to their new home.
However, what caught the eye of netizens was her daughter sitting on the floor with her plate. While the family is enjoying their lunch and engaging in conversation, the girl is seen sitting with a grim expression on the floor. Shah explained in the caption that her daughter was sitting on the floor because she was on her period and they “strictly avoid person to person contact during those days of month”.
She further said how she and her daughter follow this tradition as this decision was taken by their “family since ages”.
“First family lunch after shifting… still so much unpacking to be done .. hoping to finish it in 2/3 days …!! P.S yess.. we strictly avoid person to person contact during those days of month.. and I and Janvi love to cling to it and we respect that desicion taken by my family since ages , and till today we observe it very strictly ..! Shah wrote as the caption.

The video was posted on November 6 and has amassed more than 6.6 million views. However, the comments have been disabled.
A few netizens shared the clip on X, formerly Twitter, and expressed outrage.
“Some “influencer” has posted a reel of her family in a posh looking house sitting on the dining table & eating then the video cuts to her sitting on the floor a little away from them & eating her food. in the caption she mentions, it’s bcs she’s on her period. great culture,” a user wrote.
“It’s her daughter who is sitting on the floor and eating who looks mad af about it but the mother is so proud of it,” a user commented on the post. “So glad my family doesn’t have this kind of rituals and whenever I get to know all this I feel so blessed,” said another. “This happens only in the most orthodox and narrow minded people in India but everyone is changing with time! I’m hopefully this untouchable culture goes away as well,” another netizen wrote.
