RIP Pankaj Udhas: Fans mourn death of Ghazal singer, say ‘a part of my childhood lost today’

Popular Ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas passed away on Monday at 72. His daughter Nayyab confirmed the news of his demise on social media and informed about his prolonged illness. Sharing the news, Nayyab wrote, “With a very heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of the sad demise of Padmashri Pankaj Udhas on 26th February 2024 due to a prolonged illness. Udhas family.”

After the news of Udhas’s death broke out, celebrities—including Aahana Kumra, Sonu Nigam, and others—extended condolences. Kumra wrote, “I’m so sorry to hear this. May his soul rest in peace. Om Shanti.”

Sonu Nigam dedicated a post to the singer, along with a heartfelt note. “One of the most important part of my childhood, is lost today. Shri Pankaj Udhas ji, I will miss you forever. My heart cries knowing that you are no more. Thank you for being there. Om Shanti,” he wrote.

Pankaj Udhas’s fans also mourned his death and paid their tributes on social media. A fan wrote, “Today, i yet again bid adieu another musician who gave me peace through his singing. A good human being with such a calm composure & down to earth nature, who’s voice & emotional Ghazals will remain as a treasure for generations. May your soul rest in peace #PankajUdhas sir.”

Sharing one of her favourite songs crooned by Udhas, a fan wrote, “So sad to learn of the passing of the legendary #PankajUdhas ji. Countless songs & countless memories. This one in #Saajan is a particular favourite of mine.”

Pankaj Udhas was popular for his ghazals like “Chitthi Aayee Hai”, “Mat Kar Itna Guroor”, “Na Kajare Ki Dhar”, and “Chandi Jaisa Rang Hai Tera” among others. In 2006, he was honoured with India’s fourth highest civilian award, Padma Shri.
