A hostel mess in an Odisha college has come under fire for allegedly serving food with a dead frog in it. On September 23, X user @aaraynsh shared a photo of the contaminated food and wrote, “This is KIT Bhubaneswar, ranked ~42 among engineering colleges in India, where parents pay approx 17.5 lakhs to get their child an engineering degree. This is the food being served at the college hostel. Then we wonder why students from India migrate to other countries for better education and facilities.”

The next day, @aaraynsh shared a photo of a notice served by the college to the caterers. The notice, addressed to “M/s. Capital Caterer Mess Contractor KP-8” said that in light of the incident, “one day payment for (Breakfast, Lunch, Snacks & Dinner) food items is hereby deducted as a token of punishment since this concerns the boarders health and hygiene”.

The notice also read, “Further, you are WARNED to be very much careful while preparing food for the boarders of your allotted hostels. You are again instructed to keep your kitchen, store and food quality hygienic.”

However, many people were outraged by the institute’s feeble stand against the caterers considering the severity of the offence which could have led to serious health complications.

Commenting on the college’s notice, an X user wrote, “The food contractor must be dismissed immediately and followed by suspension of license for atleast 4 years. There are deserving people out there should be given chance to prove worth.”

Another person wrote, “This is unacceptable at so many levels, no responsibility, literally playing with the health of students, a very similar incident happened at my college but at least they fired the mess provider and made a committee to keep check on standards on regular interval”.
