As the controversy surrounding Hindi movie Padmavati continues, members of the film fraternity have come together to extend their support. Many eminent actors voiced their opinion openly and joining them was veteran actress Shabana Azmi. Taking to Twitter Azmi today raised questions over the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) sending back the application for the certification of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus and also urged others to stand together in this time of crisis.
“#Padmavatis application to CBFC has been sent back bcoz of incomplete formalities! Really? Or to keep fires stoked for electoral gains?” the actor asked on the microblogging site. The censor board decided to send the Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, and Shahid Kapoor starrer film back citing “deficiency in the application”.
While the government is all set to open International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa on November 20 and I&B Minister Smriti Irani is at the helm of it preparing for the gala event, Azmi lashed out at her too. “Smriti Irani is preparing IFFI dats possible only bcoz the Indian Film Industry brings such acclaim to it but keeps quiet about Padmavati!” she added.
She further suggested that the “entire film industry should boycott IFFI” owing to the threats to Deepika Padukone and Bhansali.
While many supported her, others criticised her for being quiet when other films were on the verge of being banned.
