Why are Williams and Wilmore stuck in space?
Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore are currently stranded on the ISS after technical problems with Boeing’s Starliner, including helium leaks and thruster malfunctions, delayed their return. Originally scheduled for an eight-day mission, their stay has now been extended until at least February 2025. NASA has decided that the astronauts will return to Earth aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 spacecraft, as the Starliner is deemed unsafe for re-entry. SpaceX Crew-9 mission commander Nick Hague and Roscosmos cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov are in quarantine, preparing for the rescue mission.
