Afghanistan scripted a historic eight-wicket win over Pakistan in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 at the M A Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Monday. It was Afghanistan’s first-ever win over Pakistan in ODIs and the players erupted in joy after securing a well-deserved victory.

The official account of the ICC posted several videos on Instagram showing the jubilant scenes inside the Afghanistan dressing room. The players are seen dancing joyfully and cheering along with their support staff after their famous win that would be remembered for ages.

Former India cricketer Irfan Pathan, who is working as a presenter at the tournament, also broke into a dance with Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan as they were doing a victory lap of the ground.

“Rasid khan fulfilled his promise and I fulfilled mine. Well done guys,” Pathan posted on X as he shared a couple of photos of his impromptu dance with the Afghan player.


Mohammad Nabi, 38, one of the seniors of the young Afghanistan team, also posted a video showing the team’s celebrations.

“Congratulations! Our team emerged triumphant n an epic battle against ending a long-awaited victory drought. It was a true test of skills & teamwork. All showcased thr immense tlnt & unwavering dedication. Let’s celebrate ds 2gether n d glory of our great team & people,” Nabi posted on X.


In the match, openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran scored half-centuries to lead Afghanistan to a historic eight-wicket win against Pakistan.

Opting to bat, Pakistan scored 282 for 7. Captain Babar Azam top-scored with 74 off 92 deliveries, while opener Abdullah Shafique contributed 58. Shadab Khan and Iftikhar Ahmed made 40 each down the order to take the score past 280. Noor Ahmad was the most successful Afghan bowler with figures of 3/49, while Naveen-ul-Haq chipped in with 2/52.

Earlier, Afghanistan staged an upset 69-run win over defending champions England at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. Afghanistan now have four points from five games. Their next match is against Sri Lanka on October 30.
