The elderly in our family are full of anecdotes and profound wisdom that only comes with age. While many of these stories are passed down as familial folklore, now a content creator has shared a unique idea of transcribing such life lessons into a book.
On Monday, motivational speaker and writer Sahil Bloom shared a long X post in which he recalled that his mother had hired a ‘writer’ through an elderly care service to “record and transcribe stories from my grandmother”.
They eventually hired a recent university graduate named Raika Sengupta who met their grandmother every week for an hour to talk about the elderly lady’s life such as her funniest childhood memories, her greatest adventures, and her biggest regrets.
After Sengupta was done with recording and transcribing their grandmother’s recollections, Bloom’s mother began editing this text and converted them into stories for a book. Explaining this process, Bloom writes, “She (his mother) worked with my grandmother on the flow and filling in the gaps. They added chapters on special people in her life—siblings, friends, etc. We wanted to add photos to the book, so the whole family got involved.”
He writes that now this book is almost complete and they plan to give its copy to their family member so that they can remember their grandmother when she is gone.
Bloom’s post has over 11,000 likes. Commenting on his post, a Twitter user wrote, “What a wonderful idea! This is an amazing way to preserve family history and legacy. I love the concept of using words to capture and retain our loved ones’ stories. I think it’s something many families can learn from. It’s special and meaningful. Thank you for sharing this beautiful experience.”
Another person wrote, “I have ghostwritten two dozen such memoirs over the years and it is beyond rewarding to be responsible for creating legacy masterworks for generations to come. The story outlives the person!”
