The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 is turning out to be an unpredictable tournament as there have been a couple of unexpected results with minnows getting the better of Test nations. The Netherlands beat their much-fancied opponents South Africa by 38 runs in Dharamsala on Tuesday. On Sunday, Afghanistan beat defending champions England by 69 runs in Delhi.
Now, the match between England and South Africa, to be played on Saturday at Mumbai’s iconic Wankhede Stadium, has assumed added significance as it is crucial for both the team’s chances of making it into the semifinals.
Alex Ellis, British High Commissioner to India, took to X, formerly Twitter, to share a cheeky tweet ahead of the highly-anticipated match. Ellis wrote “welcome to our world” as he posted the flags of South Africa and England.
“England-South Africa at the Wankhede will be a great match,” a user commented. “Haha! South Africa who lost to the Netherlands will next face England who lost to Afghanistan. – 21st October at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai!” said another. “Ambassador, you have a very good sense of humor. I remember once you cracked a joke on a Manchester United fan in ISKCON Delhi about Manchester United, which will need much more than God’s blessings for their revival,” wrote a third.
“Dear High Commissioner, now if you could only invite Australia & New Zealand to join this ‘mini-quad’, India’s road to the final would get a lot smoother and easier. Thanks in advance,” another netizen posted.
South Africa won their opening two games against Sri Lanka and Australia before their surprise loss to the Netherlands. England lost their opening match to New Zealand by nine wickets and then won their match against Bangladesh by 137 runs. England lost to Afghanistan by 69 runs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, in one of the biggest surprises of the tournament so far.
