After Infosys co-founder N R Narayana Murthy remarked that youngsters in India should work 70 hours a week, Bharat Pe CEO Ashneer Grover took a dig at him saying, “Work is still being measured in ‘hours’ than ‘outcome’.” Grover’s post on X has triggered a plethora of responses and reignited debate on work culture.

In a quirky post, Grover wrote, “I think junta got offended here because work is still being measured in ‘hours’ than ‘outcome’. The other thing is people feeling as if youngster’s laziness is only thing keeping India from becoming developed. Funny – getting offended unites us more than cricket, religion, caste or language.”

While a few social media users supported Murthy’s comment, several others disagreed with it. A user commented, “I support Murthy sir’s 70 productive hrs statement, as a promoter nothing wrong in expecting such.” Another user remarked, “Measuring work solely in hours can be outdated and may not accurately reflect productivity or efficiency.

“Factors like skills, infrastructure, education, governance, innovation and economic policies plays a key role in enabling better outcome. We seldom discuss these factors.”

A third user said, “Junta is offended because slowly they will start normalising working 16 hour shifts also.”

The 77-year-old billionaire appeared on the first episode of 3one4 Capital’s podcast ‘The Record’ where he made the remarks during a conversation with former Infosys CFO Mohandas Pai. Murthy said India’s work productivity is among the lowest in the world. He added that in order to compete with countries like China, the country’s youngsters must put in extra hours of work – like Japan and Germany did after World War II. Similarly, in 2020, Murthy had asked professionals to work 60 hours a week for the next two to three years to revive the post-pandemic economy.
