Industrialist Anand Mahindra has called for action after 18 people were killed in the recent stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. Sharing a news report by indianexpress.com, the business tycoon emphasised the urgent need for a national strategy to avert similar incidents in the future.

He also urged the Mahindra University in Hyderabad to develop a model for crowd management.

The chairperson of the Mahindra Group wrote, “This is heartbreaking. And a national tragedy. As the world’s most populous nation, with one of the lowest per capita incomes, we need to make crowd control & safety an article of faith & a national mission.”

“We need a template of crowd management that is a combination of Technology & Process Analysis. We all need to chip in. I request the Engineering and Management schools at Mahindra University, Hyderabad, to work on the problem jointly & devise such a template,” Mahindra wrote on X.

Several social media users took the opportunity to reflect on the deadly stampede, with one saying, “We need basic security gates just like airports. Ensure only passengers with tickets are allowed. Everyone knows this, but no one dares to question why this was not done yet.” Another user commented, “We need to teach DISCIPLINE from KG level..half the problem solved!!!”

“First Indian Railways need to implement rule and security personnels so that none without a ticket gets entry in any Railway station,” a third user reacted.

The stampede broke out at New Delhi Railway Station between 9 pm and 9.20 pm on Saturday amid the rush to travel to the Mahakumbh. Following the incident, eight companies of paramilitary forces, including the Rapid Action Force, were deployed on Sunday, along with extra personnel from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Delhi Police, for crowd control at the station until the end of the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj.
