On Saturday, heavy rain lashed several parts of Mumbai signalling the arrival of the monsoon in the city. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mumbai recorded 115 mm of rain until 8.30 pm on Saturday.
The residents of Mumbai, the financial capital of India, are no strangers to heavy monsoon rains. Like every year, this year too the residents have taken to Twitter to highlight how the city’s infrastructure crumbled at the first signs of rain.
Residents and citizen welfare associations shared videos showing waterlogged streets and overflowing drains which not only caused traffic snarls but also endangered lives. People questioned the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), considered to be the richest municipal corporation in India, for not cleaning sewage and drainage systems ahead of the monsoons.

A Twitter user @AdvKambleNikhil) shared a video of half-submerged cars from Mumbai and wrote, “MumbaiRains and our Mumbai becomes swimming pool immediately. We can’t count how many crore of tax payers hard earned money washed away every year in the name of #NalaSafai by BMC. Corruption is the second name of BMC.”
Another Twitter user @manicmande shared a video, reportedly taken from a waterlogged BKC Connector flyover and wrote, “This. Is. On. A. Flyover. How do you flood a flyover?? #MumbaiRains”.
The Chandivali Citizens Welfare Association (@ChandivaliCCWA) also tweeted a video that showed a bulldozer trying to clear sludge from an inky waterlogged intersection as rain poured on. As per the welfare association, this video was taken outside the Saki Naka Metro station.
