In recent years, Halloween has become a popular cultural phenomenon. It has spread from Western countries to all over the world. Now as October hits, people start posting about Halloween and all things spooky.
On Sunday, AI artist Prateek Arora shared a set of AI-made images that depicted ghosts against Indian backdrops. While sharing these images, Arora wrote, “Since it’s Halloween month, here’s some of my Indian horror art from the past year #ai”. These images were made using Midjourney, an AI tool that creates images from textual prompts.
Commenting on this post, an Instagram user wrote, “Folk Horror Halloween 🎃👻”. Another person wrote, “Some of them are actually terrifying because they look normal.”
Arora is known for incorporating sci-fiction and horror elements in his AI artwork. In February, he shared a series of artworks titled ‘Old Delhi by Night’, which showed ghostly figures dressed in traditional attire.
Arora is not the only AI artist who has experimented with the horror genre in his artwork. In March, an AI artist from Assam, Chinmoy Barma, visualised a set of images that depicted ghosts based on Assamese folklore.
Barma’s artwork consisted of the ghost Bira, who is often connected with people undergoing emotional stress, the three-legged Kon Bhoot, and Jokhini, a female ghost who is believed to visit pregnant women and steal their babies. He also draws Ghorpak, a mysterious half-horse and half-human ghost found in swampy areas at night, and Puwali Bhoot who is believed to steal rice and sweets from the kitchen and resorts to killing if challenged or denied food.
