In India, people often adorn delicacies and sweets in edible gold and silver sheets. A tea stall in Lucknow has taken this one step further when they liberally added edible gold foil over a humble cup of tea.

Now a video of this “24k gold tea” is raking up likes. The video shows a chef simply making a cup of masala chai and then covering its surface with a gold foil. This video was posted on Instagram by food influencer Lucknow Food Influencer (@eattwithsid).

As per the video’s caption, it was taken at 21 Carat Tea, a food stall in Rajajipuram, Lucknow. The food vlogger gave the tea 2.5/5 stars. One can get this cup for Rs 249.

Commenting on it, a Twitter user wrote, “Poison has been found 🥳🥳”. Another person said, “These are the reasons i don’t like Lucknow”.

While gold, a non-reactive element, is safe to consume in edible foil form, it’s interesting to note that it has no health or nutritional benefits.

This is not the only dish that uses excessive gold in its preparation. Last year, the Brij Rasayanam Misthan Bhandar, a popular sweet shop in Agra, created a gold leaf-covered ghevar that was priced at Rs 25,000 per kg. This special sweet was made to mark the festivals like Teej and Raksha Bandhan that fall during the rainy season. Ghevar requires the humidity of the monsoon to retain the moisture that gives it a soft and spongy texture.
