A Toronto couple threw their friends and family a unique gender reveal party to raise awareness about gender being a social construct, and the video is going viral on several social media platforms.
The unnamed Toronto couple decided to go out of their way to show people that gender reveal parties truly celebrate the cultural meanings attached to femininity and masculinity.
In the video, as friends and family finish the countdown, the soon-to-be father opens the spray can. However to everyone’s surprise, instead of the blue or pink colour, green smoke comes out.
The video then shows everyone around them visibly distressed and choking. While the pregnant woman pretends to be shocked, the soon-to-be father apologises to everyone. The video ends with a message which reads, “Gender is a construct”.

Gender reveal videos and parties have been gaining momentum on social media. Though at first glance, it’s a celebration of new life, the central focus has shifted to celebrating various nuances of gender.While blue is used to indicate a boy, and pink for girls, couples have been doing various things to reveal the gender of the child they are expecting.
The video, which was originally on TikTok was shared by Twitter user Nikki Mccann Ramírez. She also explained the concept of the video in the comments.
Though the video went viral, it got mixed reactions. While several people came up with jokes and memes, others supported the makers of the video.
