Meteor sightings are one of those things that are guaranteed to inspire awe. Earlier this week, many people across Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi in the US saw a blazing green meteor flashing through the sky.
Meteors, which are made of metals like iron and nickel, emit green colour when they burn through the atmosphere. And, if a meteor crosses through space and hits the ground without getting fully burnt up, it’s called a meteorite.
On Tuesday, the BBC shared a compilation of videos showing the blazing meteor through car dashboards and home cameras. This video has gathered over 22,000 likes.
Commenting on the video, an Instagram user joked, “That should’ve happened on St Patrick’s Day”. Another person wrote, “Back in the day they would’ve said it was god.”
Many people who witnessed the meteor also commented on the post. An Instagram user wrote, “The meteor was both beautiful and haunting, reminding me of the mysterious nature of the universe but it was beautiful.” Another person recalled, “We were driving down a highway just before light and one flew over our head going in the same direction. It was an moment.”
In November 2020, Josua Hutagalung, a coffin maker in Indonesia, became a millionaire overnight after a meteorite worth an estimated £1.4 million crashed through the roof of his home. He sold the meteorite to US expert Jared Collins and the rock is currently stored at the Centre for Meteorite Studies at Arizona State University.
