Super typhoon Yagi, Asia’s strongest storm this year, hit China’s Hainan on September 6, triggering incessant rain and strong winds of 234 km per hour. The calamity caused widespread power outages, leaving residents to struggle to make ends meet.

Now, an X thread is grabbing attention showing the “downside of cashless society” in China’s Hainan. In a video shared by X handle Songpinganq, several residents can be seen gathered at a makeshift charging point, desperate to charge their mobile phones. The vendor was seen using an engine for the current. “Downside of cashless society. Hainan, China. After the typhoon, the water and electricity were cut off, Chinese people desperately wanted to charge their phones. Because all your money is in your mobile phone. Without a mobile phone, you can’t even buy a piece of bread,” the handle wrote.

Another video showed the downside of electric cars, leaving people helpless and rushing to charging stations to charge their electric vehicles.

After claiming the lives of at least 16 people in the northern Philippines earlier this week, typhoon Yagi made its landfall in the city of Wenchang in Hainan on Friday. Reuters reported that Yagi affected 830,000 households due to power outages.

According to news agency Xinhua, the power supply department of the province formed a 7,000-member emergency team for repair works. Power to 260,000 households was restored by Friday night.

Meanwhile, the death toll in Vietnam due to typhoon Yagi surged to 127, as reported by Reuters on Tuesday. Landslides and floods triggered by the typhoon have killed at least 127 people in northern Vietnam and 54 others were missing. Typhoon Yagi hit Vietnam on Saturday.
