The Iskitimka river in Russia has taken on a disturbing beetroot-red hue.The incident has raised concerns among local residents, who report not only a drastic change in the river’s colour but also a visible impact on the wildlife in the region.
The incident has turned the Iskitimka river, which is situated in southern Russia and flows through an industrial city, into a focal point for environmental concerns, prompting urgent investigations by officials in the Siberian Kemerovo area. The refusal of ducks to swim in the river has raised an alarm among activists and locals alike.
A video shared on @worlderlust’s Instagram page shows the ghastly red river.
Images and videos circulating on social media depict the once-clear waters of the Iskitimka and its present condition in what appears to be a surreal shade of red, intensifying calls to identify the contaminant and mitigate its effects.
One user wrote, “Kinda feels like Mother Earth is bleeding cause of all the pollution and damage we have inflicted upon her.” Another said, “It is so heart breaking what humans have done to this planet”.
A third opted to refer to the scripture with a sense of foreboding, saying, “Exactly what the Bible says would happen.”
