Under Elon Musk’s contested leadership, there have been several major changes within Twitter. As of Monday afternoon, the micro-blogging platform’s iconic blue bird logo has been replaced with a sleek ‘X’ logo. The domain X.com is now being redirected to Twitter.
This rebranding of Twitter is not just an aesthetic exercise. Reportedly the ‘X’ logo is part of a larger effort to convert Twitter into an “everything app”, based on China’s WeChat, that allows users to do everything from making payments to hotel booking.
On March 15, soon after Musk took over as Twitter CEO, the site’s legal name was changed to X Corp. It is interesting to note that Musk has frequently shown an affinity towards the alphabet X. His spacecraft engineering company is named SpaceX and Tesla’s first SUV model, launched in 2015, was named Model X.
After Twitter’s logo change, memes have been flooding the microblogging site. A popular meme shows, the bluebird saying that it was “fired” by Musk, alluding to Twitter’s controversial mass layoffs. Brands are cashing in on moment marketing through memes.
Following the logo change, Linda Yaccarino, the current CEO of Twitter, tweeted, “It’s an exceptionally rare thing – in life or in business – that you get a second chance to make another big impression. Twitter made one massive impression and changed the way we communicate. Now, X will go further, transforming the global town square.”
She further added, “X is the future state of unlimited interactivity – centered in audio, video, messaging, payments/banking – creating a global marketplace for ideas, goods, services, and opportunities. Powered by AI, X will connect us all in ways we’re just beginning to imagine.”
